DAN MANGAN

rsz_1c-dan_mangan_oh_fortune

Having toured with the likes of The Walkmen, The Decemberists and Okkervil River, Dan Mangan has come a long stride from his hometown of Vancouver, Canada. Oh Fortune is a rather ambitious album offering up a rich, textured, indie-folk sound.

dansolo6

“The sound has been stretched in different directions by the players and how they’ve warped my mind over the last few years,” Dan admits, adding, “I always simply aimed to surround myself with people who were creatively inspiring.”

Dan Mangan - Rows of Houses

“There exists in Oh Fortune this chaos of juxtaposition. It could be taken as a sad or dark album, yet musically it kicks with more ferocity and tenacity than people may expect from Mangan. It debates melancholy while it anticipates incredible moments of glory and victory. It’s not sad, it’s simply honest. Life is just that.”

FACONNABLE: LIMITED EDITION SUNGLASSES

“The striking frames, a marriage of Italian design and French Riviera allure, feature a colorful Façonnable-striped motif along the frames with matching tinted lenses. Featuring a brushed steel frame with acetate front and tips with mirrored lenses, these lightweight shades inject a hint of “bon vivant” appeal to any look. These sunglasses also have a philanthropic view. Façonnable will donate a portion of sales of the pink shade from the collection to The Lyla Nsouli Foundation For Children’s Brain Cancer Research, a UK registered charity dedicated to fighting the harrowing disease.” The sunglasses will be available at The Shop at Bluebird in the following color combinations:

MERCHANTS IN LONDON

New to the POP-UP space, we welcome the Merchants on Long, to London. Arriving smoothly last night from South Africa, Cape Town’s destination boutique for contemporary African fashion, art and homewear is now housed in our space. In 2010, Merchants on Long re-opened its doors as South Africa’s first salon store of its kind. Much like The Shop at Bluebird’s philosophy, the Merchants support local fashions and design, so what a better place to host their most coveted items than in our POP-UP shop? Here’s a peek at what’s in store.

NOUVELLE VAGUE: VERSION FRANCAISE

rsz_nouvellepercent20vague_big

“With a name that means “new wave” in English and “bossa nova” in Portuguese, Nouvelle Vague’s moniker neatly sums up the group’s concept: remaking classic new wave singles with a Brazilian pop twist. Nouvelle Vague are the brainchild of French producers Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux…”

Screen shot 2012-05-02 at 6.04.36 PM

“…Prior to this collaboration, Collin played with the trip-hop outfit Ollano; composed film soundtracks such as The Kidnapper’s Theme; and released electronic music ranging from club-oriented material for Paper Recordings to more eclectic fare for Fcom and Output Records (under the aliases Avril and Volga Select, respectively). Libaux played with various French pop bands during the ’90s and began working with Collin in 1998. For Nouvelle Vague, Collin and Libaux recruited half a dozen French and Brazilian vocalists who were unfamiliar with the original versions of songs like Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” and XTC’s “Making Plans for Nigel” to ensure that their renditions had their own identity. Nouvelle Vague was released in Europe in 2004 and received U.S. distribution in spring 2005, which coincided with tour dates in locales as far-flung as Shanghai, New York, Los Angeles, and Rio de Janeiro.” – iTunes

RIKA MAGAZINE ISSUE No6 BIRDS OF PARADISE

mag

Last night saw the launch of Ulrika Lundgren’s sixth issue of RIKA MAGAZINE. The publication is launched bi-annually, following each season of  the Rika collection. So suffice to say that this issue’s inspirations include sun, sun, sun, and sun. And of course Rika’s current inspirations coming from art, music and her girls of the mo. Each issue is printed with multiple covers to reflect the eclectic and diverse inspirations behind the brand. This time around, we have the pleasure of laying eyes on the looks of cover girls Caroline de Maigret, Edie Campbell, Irina Lazareanu and Liberty Ross. Contributing editors include Alice Pfeiffer: freelance writer extraordinaire who has written for the likes of the New York Times, the International Herald Tribune, Art in America, Interview, Tank and Elle US as well as Indigo Clarke: New York based fashion journalist who writes for numerous publications and websites including AnOther Magazine, Lula Magazine, W Magazine, VOGUE UK.com, etc, etc…!

Here is a glimpse of the pop-up space, and here you are you lovely people.

CATCHING UP WITH: MANUELA DACK

new_logo

In our latest initiative to catch up with some of London’s finest young talent, something you can find quite a bit of around The Bluebird, we interview Manuela Dack. Vaulted out of Middlesex university only a few seasons ago, Manuela is already making some much deserved waves in the London fashion scene. After discovering her designs at concept shop Machine A, Bluebird became one of her first stockists. This season sees influences from Manuela’s childhood, growing up on a small Caribbean island, as well as her signature: leather and silk, two seemingly contrasting materials that she has seamlessly intertwined.

P1282809

TSAB: How did the Manuela Dack label come about?

MD: I always knew I wanted to start my own label at some point, so when my graduate collection got significant press attention it seemed like the best time.

TSAB: How was it to work for Alexander Wang versus having your own line?

MD: Doing work experience at Alexander Wang was such a pleasure because it is so organized. It was an incredibly positive work environment and everyone there, from the designers to the sales team to the accountants, has such a clear understanding of what the company is about.

You never realize until you do it yourself just how much hard work goes into making everything seem that effortless.

TSAB: How has your brand evolved over time?

MD: The core principals have been the same since day one, focusing on quality and detail working predominantly with silk and leather. It has been interesting to see which aspects our customer has really been drawn to and accentuate those.

It always seems to be the most expensive, highly crafted pieces that do well, so it’s nice to know that our customer appreciates those pieces as much as we do.

As with the Atelier that we have launched this season I see the future of luxury being very customer driven so for me it is so important to grow the brand around them.

TSAB: How would you describe your design process for each collection? Is there something that is very ‘signature’ you?

MD: I always work with leather and silk and over time this has become my signature. I love the contrast in that combination and the challenges that come with working with two opposing materials. For me good design is all about balance and contrast.

TSAB: What are you looking forward to for the future of Manuela Dack?

MD: We just launched the Atelier and had a great reaction to that during fashion week. I am also in the process of developing an online store for our accessories. This sits well with our signature materials, leather and silk, as it will be mainly silk scarves and small leather goods like our belts and bags.

Next season I am planning to launch another section to the label that caters to the kind of commission requests that we receive a lot. There will be more on this soon so keep an eye on our blog and website for more details.

TSAB: How would you define your personal style? Does it reflect in your collections?

MD: I would say my personal style is very similar to the way I design, minimal with a huge attention to detail. I tend to choose clothes based on their details and fabrics – it’s about the ease of elegance and youthful sophistication.

TSAB: How has London influenced the brand, would you consider your label to be distinctly London?

MD: I would say that my label is distinctly London in that, like London it is eclectic in terms of the inspiration and research that goes into it. Growing up in Cayman, which are British Isles, we had a great sense of identity that has influenced the brand today. I also think the way that women dress in London has had a huge impact. Women here are fearless and have great style unlike anywhere else in the world.

TSAB: Who are your favorite designers at the moment?

MD: A friend of mind Lucas Nascimento has been doing some really beautiful work recently. Otherwise I always love Jil Sander. I was sad to see Raf Simons leave. His last spring/ summer collection with all the white shirtdresses was perfection.

TSAB: Where else have you gathered inspiration? (music, art, travels)?

MD: I am fortunate to travel a lot because my parents live in the Cayman Islands and I have a lot of friends in Paris and New York. My boyfriend is half Italian and we spent a few weeks in the south of Italy last November, which really influenced my recent Autumn/ Winter collection.

I also stockpile books on every subject under the sun! Recent additions include a book on Richard Neutra the architect and a huge book of Elizabeth Peyton paintings.

TSAB: What other side projects are you currently involved with or do you have in mind?

MD: I am working on a new film project with the art director Alexander Ingham Brooke. His work is absolutely stunning so I’m really excited to be working with him.

SIX SCENTS – SERIES THREE

sixscentsEvery year a group of six diverse artists are chosen to create a series of fragrance with six perfumiers for Warchild International and asked to tell a story through fragrance.

Stocked in store, Series Three finds Alexis Mabille, Juun J and Mary Katrantzou amongst a group of fashion designers exploring childhood memories and hitting adolescence. Here are their tales and scents…

Beaubowboxbeaubott

Beau Bow – Alexis Mabille and Rodrigo Flores Roux
In the countryside colorfully making crowns of chevrefeuille. Ribbons and embroidery for Aglaee to enter curiously. A delirious world of frivolity. Where fables of La Fontaine come alive. In a giant room with dozens of chandeliers and mirrors on the wall. And Aglaee dressed formerly for all the other cats to see. And listen to his poetry.

Top Notes: Luminous hesperides: Sicilian Cedrat, Juicy Mandarin, Calabrese Bergamot and Tart Bigarade Orange from Andalusia Playful herbal and green accents: Provencal Lavender, “Grand Vert” Basil, Garden Mint, Violet Leaf Absolute, Persian Galbanum, Lentisque Resin Heart Notes: Lush and layered florals: Egyptian Jasmine, Sambac from india, Magnolia Grandiflora, Rose Altar from Bulgaria, Wild Alpine Cyclamen and White Honeysuckle Bottom notes: An elegant Chypre accord: Vetyvert from Reunion, Mossy nuances, Iris Absolute from Florence and the sheer woodiness of Kephalis

- Rodrigo Flores-Roux, Perfumer

Liked by : Beau Bow Was liked by girls who were down to earth and open; the early twenties flower child or club nymph. All were, bizarrely enough, cute, smiley and very friendly. They mainly liked mainstream music, but had a broader taste than some of the other more specific interviewees. A Beau Bow girl had a really wide range in guys ranging from Russell Brand to Tim Burgess.

Trompe L’Oeil – Mary Katrantzou and Shyamala Maisondieu

Swinging in a rooftop garden. Excitedly waiting for the guests to arrive. A whisper calls and senses come alive. Swaying into breezes of a cake baking, shampooed hair, burnt matches, lipstick and the fresh sea on the warm summer air. Imagining the projector can make a slideshow of thoughts. Casting an entire summer vacation onto the building’s white facade.

Top Notes: Bitter Orange, Mandarin, Neroli, Pear
Heart Notes: Mimosa, Rose Absolute, Ylang Ylang, Tuberose Absolute, Orris Absolute
Bottom Notes: Amyris, Tonka Beans, Ambrette Seeds, Vanilla Absolute

Can’t smell Fear Juun J
Fog rolls over the quietness at dawn. Over the asphalt and grey buildings, parked cars and trees, over everyone in black and grey walking their monochrome pets. Businessmen and students like cloud formations in the street, quietly gliding by.
Dissolving into one another, mixing on the crosswalk. Meanwhile, a night that never ended begins a morning with the smell of soft skin. Strange and new like the first day of school or the start of an unexpected addiction.

Top Notes: Bergamot Essence, Green Mandarin Essence, Pink Pepper Essence, Nutmeg Essence
Heart Notes: Orris, Ambrette Seeds Essence,
Cederwood Atlas Essence, Incense Resinoid
Bottom Notes: Leather Accord, Sandalwood,
Amber, Musks

Can’t Smell Fear was liked by girls who were more into rock music and less into pop. They loved films like Almost Famous and predominately spend their time going to gigs and dreaming about guys like Alex Turner and Ryan Gosling. They were only found in the haunts across Camden and a couple of times in the pubs off the Portobello Market. They were between the ages of 21-28 and every single one of them had dark brown hair.

Ascent by Rad Hourani

Remember when there was pure freedom no seasons no reasons no rules. Just endless dreams. Letting go, inside heaven without fences, wide-open. Rising into a world of ambiguity with silent closed eyes.

Top Notes: Pear Juice, Violet Leaf
Heart Notes: Ylang Ylang, Rose, Cedarwood, Leather Accord
Bottom Notes: Incence, Powdery Musks, Tonka Beans, Benzoin

- Christophe Raynaud, Perfumer

Ascent were women that loved films like The Note Book and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Music tastes ranged from Katie Melua to Adele. They were around mid-twenties, and from the ones that we spoke to, never really ventured out of the West London quarter. Ideal men ranged again from Liam Hemsworth, to a few chapo’s we had never heard of, sporting double barrelled surnames.

Watch and wait in silence for three years, just feeling each other from the depths of the heart. Finally, suntan lotion and fresh saltiness from the ocean mixing with the deep and mysterious scent of Kurobe Dam through cracked windows into the backseat. Knowing you’re not supposed to do it, but going ahead anyway.

Top Notes: Hiba Tree, Sugi Leaves, Green Cypress
Heart Notes: Motor Oil, Salty-Icy Water Accord, Nutmeg, Moroccan Rosemary

Bottom Notes: Tonka Beans, Venezuela, Castoreum, Civet, Musks: MoxaloneTM Captive, CosmoneTM

- Yann Vasnier, Perfumer

M Seemed to be preferred by ladies that knew what they liked. They generally had no hesitation when answering our questions. They seemed to be strong willed and confident ladies, who liked the more rugged, sexual male. Ideal men ranged from Gerard Butler, James Franco and Jonny Depp. Interestingly, M was a big divider of opinions; with almost as many girls choosing it as their least favourite as their favourite.

‘Making Scents of Memories: From Innocence to Experience’, captures the collaboration, creative process, memories and journeys of these six…watch it here.

Thanks to A Man about Town we got some great feedback on who these scents appealed to most….stock up in store and read more here.
